What AWG means
AWG stands for American Wire Gauge. It is a standardized way to describe the size of a wire or cable conductor. In the AWG system, a lower number generally indicates a larger conductor, while a higher number indicates a smaller conductor.

Why AWG matters when comparing cables

Use the AWG field to identify the listed conductor gauge, then check the rest of the specification for the information AWG does not provide. Pay particular attention to whether the value is a single gauge or a slash-style entry, and look for details about construction, materials, insulation, length, connectors, and ratings.
If a listing shows a value such as 26/7 or 26/30, do not treat it as interchangeable with a plain 26 AWG label without confirming the product’s full description. The observed catalog value may not provide enough information to determine the meaning of every slash notation.
