Cat6a

Cat6a is a category of Ethernet cabling used for network connections. It identifies the cable’s performance class, but not its construction, quality, or suitability for every installation.

What is Cat6a?

Cat6a is a category designation for Ethernet cabling. It describes a defined performance class for network cable, while the product’s actual construction and suitability depend on its full specification.

On CableFit, products may be listed with the Cat6a cable standard. Some listings also reference standards or certifications such as ANSI/TIA/EIA 568-B-1, CAT6A, ISO/IEC 11801 Class E (2nd Edition), or CENELEC.

Why does Cat6a matter when buying or comparing?

The Cat6a designation helps you compare cables intended for a particular level of Ethernet cabling performance. It can be a useful first filter when you need to match a cable to network equipment, structured cabling requirements, or an existing installation.

However, two products with a Cat6a label can still differ in shielding, conductor design, jacket material, connector type, length, and stated installation use. Compare the complete product specifications rather than relying on the category name alone.

When does Cat6a matter—and when does it not?

Cat6a matters when the network design, equipment, or cabling specification calls for Cat6a or when you are comparing cable categories for a new installation.

It matters less when the limiting factor is elsewhere, such as the network hardware, connectors, patch panel, installation method, or the capabilities of the connected devices. The cable category alone does not determine the performance of the complete network.

What does Cat6a not tell you?

Cat6a is not a quality rating. A Cat6a flag does not prove that a product has better materials, more durable construction, better shielding, or superior real-world performance than every other cable.

It also does not, by itself, confirm:

  • The cable’s exact data rate in a particular installation
  • The maximum supported run or channel length
  • Whether the cable is shielded or unshielded
  • Conductor material, wire gauge, or jacket construction
  • Connector and termination quality
  • PoE suitability or electrical ratings
  • Compliance with every feature of a referenced standard

A listed certification or standard reference should be checked against the manufacturer’s documentation. The available product context includes references to standards and nominal attenuation, but it does not provide enough detail to determine the measured attenuation, test conditions, or complete compliance status for each product.

What should you check on a product page or spec sheet?

Check the following details before buying:

  • The stated cable category and exact standard reference
  • Any certification claim, including the named standard and edition
  • Whether the cable is shielded, unshielded, solid-core, or stranded
  • Conductor material and size, if provided
  • Cable length and connector type
  • Jacket material and any stated installation or environmental rating
  • Stated attenuation or other transmission measurements, including test conditions
  • Compatibility with the intended connectors, patch panels, equipment, and installation
  • Whether the documentation covers the complete assembled cable or only the bulk cable

If a listing only says “Cat6a,” treat the details that are not shown as unknown rather than assuming a particular construction or performance result.
