What is an e-marker?
An e-marker is an electronic marker chip built into some USB-C cables. Compatible devices can read the chip to identify stored information about the cable, such as supported capabilities or operating requirements.
The term describes a cable component, not a separate connector type. A cable can have USB-C connectors without having an e-marker.
Why does it matter when buying or comparing?
An e-marker can matter when you are comparing USB-C cables for demanding combinations of data, video, or charging. Device and charger electronics may use the cable’s stored information when determining whether a particular connection is suitable.
