OM4

OM4 is a multimode fibre type used for high-speed, short-reach optical networking. On CableFit, it identifies the fibre category, not the connector, cable length, or overall product quality.

What OM4 means

OM4 is a category of multimode optical fibre. It is used in fibre cabling for short-reach data connections and is commonly associated with modern high-speed network links.

On CableFit, OM4 may appear as the product’s fibre optic type or as a technical feature. It can also appear in the descriptions of fibre patching products such as cassettes and frames.

Why it matters on CableFit

The fibre type helps you identify whether a product is intended for an OM4 multimode fibre installation. This is useful when matching a replacement cable, patching component, or related fibre product to an existing network design.

CableFit listings may also use combined labels such as OM3/OM4 or OM2/OM3/OM4. These labels indicate that the listed product is associated with more than one fibre category, but they do not by themselves explain the exact construction or performance of an individual item.

What the OM4 label does not tell you

OM4 is a fibre-category label, not a general quality rating. It does not by itself confirm:

  • The connector type, such as LC or SC
  • The cable length or fibre count
  • Whether the product is a patch cable, cassette, frame, or another component
  • The termination arrangement or polarity
  • The product’s complete transmission specifications
  • Compatibility with every item in an existing installation

A product marked OM4 can still differ from another OM4 product in its connectors, construction, packaging, and intended use.

What to check on a product page

When reviewing an OM4 listing, check the full specification rather than relying on the fibre-type field alone. Pay particular attention to:

  • The stated product type
  • Connector details at each end
  • Cable length and fibre count, where applicable
  • The listed technical specifications
  • Whether the product is sold as a cable, cassette, frame, or another fibre component
  • Any compatibility or installation information supplied by the manufacturer

If a listing only identifies OM4 without these details, those details remain unknown from the OM4 label itself.

Nearby fibre terms

OM3 is another multimode fibre category that may appear beside OM4 in CableFit listings. LC and SC refer to connector formats, not fibre types. The OM4 label should therefore be read alongside the connector and product-format information on the page.
