OS2

OS2 is a single-mode fibre optic category used for network links where single-mode transmission is required. The label identifies the fibre type, not the connector, cable length, or overall product quality.

What OS2 means

OS2 is a classification for single-mode fibre optic products. It describes the type of optical fibre used in a cable or related fibre product, commonly for network links that use single-mode transmission.

On CableFit, OS2 appears as a Fibre optic type value. Some products are labelled OS1/OS2, indicating that the catalogue entry covers both designations rather than identifying OS2 alone.

Why the label matters

The OS2 designation can help you match a fibre product with equipment and network components that require single-mode fibre. It is particularly relevant when the link design, installed fibre system or connected optical equipment specifies OS2 or another single-mode category.

It does not identify the connector. CableFit products may show connector combinations such as LC-LC or LC-SC separately from the OS2 fibre type.

What OS2 does not tell you

OS2 is a capability and classification label, not a quality rating. It does not by itself confirm:

  • Cable length or fibre count
  • Connector type, polish or termination quality
  • Indoor, outdoor, riser or other installation suitability
  • Jacket construction or bend performance
  • Transceiver compatibility
  • Attenuation, return loss or other measured performance
  • Whether every part of a product system meets your required standard

A product marked OS2 may still differ substantially from another OS2 product in its construction and intended use. The label alone should not be treated as proof of better performance.

What to check on a CableFit product page

Check the complete product specification for the required connector arrangement, such as LC-LC or LC-SC, along with length, construction, fibre count and installation environment. Confirm that the connected equipment calls for OS2 or compatible single-mode fibre.

For entries labelled OS1/OS2, check the detailed specification if the distinction between those categories matters to your installation. The combined label does not, on its own, provide every construction or performance detail.

Nearby concepts include single-mode fibre, LC, SC, and OS1/OS2.
