What PoE means
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. It allows compatible network equipment to receive electrical power through an Ethernet connection that also carries data, reducing the need for a separate power cable.

Why PoE matters

- The power available per port
- The total shared PoE budget

- Compatibility with every PoE-powered device
- The network speed or other Ethernet capabilities
CableFit listings show several different total PoE budget values, including 15.4 W, 30 W, 90 W, and 100 W. These values should not be treated as interchangeable, and a total budget is not necessarily the same as the power available from one port.
Likewise, a listing for PoE++ (4PPoE) does not automatically prove that every device described as PoE, PoE+, or PoE+++ will be compatible. The exact product specifications and the requirements of the connected equipment still matter.
When PoE matters—and when it does not
PoE matters when the connected setup is intended to transfer both power and data over Ethernet. It is less relevant when the equipment has a separate power supply and will not use PoE.
For a passive cable or other connection component, a PoE label may describe suitability within a broader system rather than the product’s ability to generate or manage power. Check the full product description instead of assuming that every PoE-labeled item performs the same function.
What to check on a product page
When comparing PoE-related products, look for:
- The exact PoE type listed, such as PoE+, PoE++ (4PPoE), or Active PoE
- Whether a total PoE budget is provided
- The product’s role in the PoE connection
- Per-port power details, if listed
- The requirements of the device you intend to connect
- Any separate Ethernet, connector, or cable specifications relevant to the installation
