S/FTP

S/FTP is a shielded twisted-pair cable design with an overall braided shield and separate foil shielding around each twisted pair. It is used to reduce electromagnetic interference and pair-to-pair crosstalk.

What S/FTP means

S/FTP describes the shielding structure of a twisted-pair Ethernet cable:

  • S means the cable has an overall braided shield.
  • F means each twisted pair has its own foil shield.
  • TP means the conductors are arranged as twisted pairs.

On CableFit, listings may show this construction as S/FTP (S-STP). That catalog label identifies the shielding arrangement; it is not, by itself, a complete statement of the cable’s category, speed capability, or build quality.

Why it can matter

Shielding is relevant when a cable may be exposed to electromagnetic interference or when reducing crosstalk between pairs is important to the installation. S/FTP provides both a cable-level shield and pair-level foil shields, so buyers comparing shielded Ethernet products can use the term to distinguish this construction from other shield types.

The label is a capability description, not a quality rating. It does not prove that a particular product will deliver better results in every installation, nor does it establish the quality of the conductors, connectors, termination, or shielding implementation.

When S/FTP matters—and when it may not

S/FTP is most useful to investigate when the installation environment, equipment requirements, or product documentation calls for shielded cabling. It may be less relevant when the installation does not require shielding and the main selection criteria are different.

The right choice depends on the complete product specification and the intended installation. S/FTP alone does not determine whether a cable is suitable for a particular network, connector, pathway, or use case.

What to check on a CableFit product page

Look beyond the shielding field and check whether the listing provides:

  • The cable category, such as Cat 6A or Cat 7
  • Conductor material and construction
  • Cable length and outside diameter
  • Connector type and whether connectors are already fitted
  • Any stated standards or installation requirements
  • Jacket, temperature, bend, or environmental details where relevant
  • Whether the product is a cable, a connector, or another accessory

A listing that says S/FTP may still leave these details unknown. Do not treat a shield label as proof of a particular transmission speed, compatibility, durability, or performance level.

Nearby terminology

S-STP is a catalog term commonly used for a cable with an overall braid and individually foil-shielded pairs. Other shield descriptions, such as F/UTP or U/FTP, use different letters to describe where the foil or braid is located. Compare the full shielding notation rather than assuming that all shielded twisted-pair cables are equivalent.
